A KITTEN GOES SOLO !
Ben is becoming a very confident performer. He has a very mature voice for a fourteen year old and his guitar playing is way ahead of his years. Ben is happy to play at any clubs we take him to, and is looking forward to Broadstairs Folk Week. He was a finalist in the New Roots Competition in St Albans where he played to a large audience and a panel of judges, including Pete Coe and Eliza Carthy. Here is a short review of the day.
New Roots Finals April 13th 2008
Having sent a c.d. in at the very last minute, we were delighted when Trevor’s 14-year-old son, Ben, was told that he had made the finals of this national competition.
Held in St Albans, the event ‘s aims were to showcase young talent. Ben was the last act of the morning, and very different from the previous performers, who were mostly traditional players, with one or two singer songwriters. After lunch the older contestants performed. Once again, there was a lot of traditional music, with some singer songwriters.
The judges for both categories were: Lynne Heraud, Andy Stafford, Eliza Carthy, and Pete Coe. They spoke to each contestant offering advice, and constructive criticism. Mostly, the criticism was to do with timing, as most had run over the allotted ten minutes. There were no outright winners, but prizes of spots at Folk Clubs and Festivals will be allocated to the lucky ones.
Ben has a gig supporting RTB at Redbourn Folk Club as one of his prizes for New Roots. The date is October 2nd
His other prize is a 15 minute spot at Leigh Folk Festival
Ben now has his own website : benlittlemusic.bravehost.com
Ben will also accompany us to The Goose is out Folk Club in Dulwich where we will all be performing on July 18th, main guest will be Jackie Oates.
